Beginner students learning Muay Thai fundamentals during their first class at Hitters Fight Club Toronto.

What to Expect at Your First Muay Thai Class in Toronto

Walking into your first Muay Thai class can feel exciting—and maybe a little intimidating. If you’ve never trained in martial arts before, it’s completely normal to have questions.

“Will everyone be more experienced than me?”

“What should I wear?”

“Do I need my own gloves?”

“Am I going to get hit?”

At Hitters Fight Club Toronto, we hear these questions all the time, and the answer is simple: everyone starts somewhere.

Our beginner-friendly classes are designed to help you learn at your own pace in a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment. Whether your goal is to improve your fitness, lose weight, learn self-defence, or eventually compete, your first class is all about building confidence and having fun.

If you haven’t already, we recommend reading our Beginner’s Guide to Muay Thai in Toronto before your first visit. It explains the basics of Muay Thai, its history, and why it’s one of the world’s most effective striking martial arts.

Arrive 15 Minutes Early

For your first class, plan to arrive about 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.

This gives you time to:

  • Meet your coach
  • Check in at the front desk
  • Meet your training partner if needed
  • Get familiar with the gym
  • Ask any questions before class begins

Starting your first session relaxed and prepared makes the experience much more enjoyable.

What Should You Wear?

One of the most common questions beginners ask is what to bring.

The good news is that you don’t need expensive equipment to get started.

We recommend:

As you continue training, you’ll eventually want to invest in your own gloves, hand wraps, shin guards, and other equipment. Our coaches are happy to recommend gear that suits your experience level.

Will I Need Equipment?

Not necessarily.

Many new students begin with basic gym attire while they decide if Muay Thai is right for them. As you become a regular member, having properly fitted gloves and hand wraps becomes an important part of your training.

We’ll be publishing a complete equipment guide soon to help you choose the right gear.

How Does a Typical Class Work?

Every class is structured to help you improve safely while having fun.

Although each session is different, you’ll typically experience:

Warm-Up

Classes usually begin with exercises that prepare your body for movement.

These may include:

  • Light jogging
  • Skipping rope
  • Dynamic stretching
  • Mobility drills
  • Core activation

This helps increase your heart rate and reduce the risk of injury before technique work begins.

Technique Instruction

Your coach will demonstrate one or more techniques for the class.

Beginners often start with:

  • Jab
  • Cross
  • Front kick (Teep)
  • Roundhouse kick
  • Basic footwork
  • Defensive movement

Coaches will break each movement down step by step before students begin practicing.

Pad Work and Partner Drills

One of the most enjoyable parts of Muay Thai training is working with a partner.

You’ll practice combinations on Thai pads while receiving feedback from your coach. Partner drills help develop timing, balance, coordination, and confidence without requiring full-contact sparring.

Conditioning

Many classes finish with conditioning exercises designed to build endurance and functional strength.

Expect bodyweight exercises such as:

  • Push-ups
  • Squats
  • Planks
  • Core work
  • Interval training

Don’t worry if you can’t complete every exercise. Progress comes from consistency, not perfection.

Will I Have to Spar?

No.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about Muay Thai.

Your first class is focused on learning the fundamentals and becoming comfortable with the techniques. Sparring, where offered, is introduced only when students have developed the necessary skills and confidence, and it is always supervised by experienced coaches.

Everyone Was Once a Beginner

It may seem like everyone else knows exactly what they’re doing, but every experienced student remembers what it felt like to attend their first class.

The Hitters Fight Club community is built on respect and encouragement. Our members know what it’s like to be new, and you’ll find that they’re often happy to help and answer questions.

How Often Should Beginners Train?

Consistency is more important than intensity.

If you’re just starting, training one to two times per week is a great way to build your skills and confidence.

As your fitness improves, you may choose to increase to three or four sessions each week.

After Your First Class

It’s normal to feel tired after your first workout. You may also notice muscle soreness over the next day or two as your body adapts to new movements.

Stay hydrated, eat a balanced meal, and give yourself time to recover.

The more consistently you train, the stronger, fitter, and more confident you’ll become.
