What to Wear and Bring to Your First Muay Thai Class

Walking into your first Muay Thai class is exciting. Whether your goal is to improve your fitness, learn self-defence, reduce stress, or eventually compete, preparing properly can make your first experience much more enjoyable.

One of the questions we hear most often at Hitters Fight Club Toronto is:

“What should I wear to my first Muay Thai class?”

The good news is that you don’t need expensive gear or years of experience to get started. In fact, most beginners already own almost everything they need.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through what to wear, what to bring, what equipment you’ll eventually need, and a few tips that will help you feel confident before stepping onto the mats.

Dress for Movement, Not Fashion

Muay Thai is a full-body sport that involves punching, kicking, knees, elbows, footwork, and movement in every direction.

Because of this, your clothing should allow you to move freely.

For your first class, we recommend:

  • Lightweight athletic T-shirt
  • Gym shorts or athletic shorts
  • Moisture-wicking workout clothing
  • Clothing that isn’t overly loose or restrictive

Avoid clothing with zippers, metal buttons, or anything that could accidentally scratch your training partner.

Comfort is far more important than appearance.

Do I Need Official Muay Thai Shorts?

No.

Many people assume they need traditional Muay Thai shorts before attending their first class.

You don’t.

While authentic Muay Thai shorts are designed to allow maximum range of motion for kicking, they’re something you can purchase later if you decide to continue training.

For your first visit, any comfortable athletic shorts work perfectly.

What Shoes Should I Wear?

Here’s something that surprises many first-time students:

You won’t wear shoes during class.

Muay Thai is practiced barefoot.

Training without shoes provides:

  • Better balance
  • Improved footwork
  • Stronger foot muscles
  • Better grip on the mats

If you’re uncomfortable walking barefoot around the gym, simply bring sandals or flip-flops to wear before and after class.

Should I Bring Boxing Gloves?

If you already own a pair of boxing or Muay Thai gloves, bring them with you.

If you don’t have gloves yet, don’t worry.

Many beginners purchase their equipment after completing their first few classes.

If you’re unsure which gloves are right for you, speak with one of our coaches before making a purchase. We’ll help you choose equipment that matches your goals and experience level.

We’ll also be publishing a complete guide on choosing your first pair of Muay Thai gloves.

Don’t Forget Hand Wraps

Hand wraps are one of the most important pieces of equipment you’ll own.

They help:

  • Support your wrists
  • Protect the small bones in your hands
  • Reduce the risk of injury
  • Improve glove fit

Even experienced fighters never train without properly wrapping their hands.

If you’ve never used hand wraps before, don’t worry—we’ll be publishing a step-by-step guide showing exactly how to wrap your hands correctly.

Will I Need Shin Guards?

Not for your very first class.

Most beginner sessions focus on learning proper technique, movement, and pad work.

As your training progresses and you participate in partner drills or controlled sparring, shin guards become an important piece of protective equipment.

Our coaches can recommend the right style and fit when you’re ready.

What Else Should You Bring?

Besides your training gear, don’t forget these essentials:

Water Bottle

You’ll sweat more than you expect.

Staying hydrated helps maintain your energy and supports recovery after training.

Small Towel

Muay Thai is a high-intensity workout.

A towel is useful for wiping sweat during breaks and after class.

Positive Attitude

This might sound simple, but it’s the most important thing you can bring.

Every experienced fighter was once a beginner.

Nobody expects perfection during your first class.

Your coaches are there to teach, and your training partners are there to help you improve.

What Should You Leave at Home?

To help create a safe training environment, avoid wearing:

  • Jewelry
  • Watches
  • Necklaces
  • Rings
  • Dangling earrings

These items can get caught during training or accidentally injure you or your partner.

It’s also a good idea to trim your fingernails and toenails before class.

Hygiene Matters

Martial arts are close-contact sports, and good hygiene is an important part of respecting your teammates.

Before class:

  • Wear clean workout clothes.
  • Make sure your gear is dry and clean.
  • Remove strong perfumes or lotions if possible.
  • Cover any cuts or abrasions.

After class:

  • Wash your hands.
  • Shower as soon as possible.
  • Hang your gloves and wraps to dry.
  • Clean your equipment regularly to help prevent odors and bacteria.

Good hygiene protects both you and your training partners and helps keep the gym a healthy environment.

Do You Need to Buy Everything Right Away?

Absolutely not.

Many beginners worry they need to spend hundreds of dollars on equipment before they’ve even attended their first class.

The reality is that you can build your gear collection over time.

As you continue training, you’ll gradually invest in:

Buying quality equipment over time is usually better than purchasing everything at once.
